Stat of the Day

When Texas A&M’s Alex Caruso missed a 3-pointer, down 12 with 38 seconds left, Northern Iowa has a win probability of 99.99%. If they re-play that situation 10,000 times, Texas A&M would win once. Last night, they won.

What happened from 10:30 p.m. to 10:50 p.m.?

HAM HAM HAM HAM HAM

Two second-round games came down to the wire nearly simultaneously. First, Texas A&M had one of the most unlikely comebacks in the history of sport. Down 12 with 34 seconds left, the Aggies went on a 14-2 run to force overtime. The first overtime period ended in a tie after a bizarre scenario in which Northern Iowa took and missed a half-court shot with five seconds left. A&M grabbed the rebound and nearly nailed a full-court shot as time expired. Northern Iowa played much of the extra periods without their three best players, losing one to injury and the other two to fouls. A&M got up in the second OT period and held on to win.

Wisconsin and Xavier was coming down to the wire at the same time. Wisconsin’s Bronson Koenig had just hit a long jumper to tie the game. Xavier held the ball for the last shot, but Wisconsin drew a charge. Wisconsin inbounded the ball and called timeout with two seconds left to draw up one last shot. Koenig one-upped himself with an impossible fall away three while crashing into his own bench as the buzzer sounded. It literally left Bill Murray in a state of shock and put the cherry on top of a hectic 15 minutes. (Bill’s son is an Assistant Coach for Xavier).

Cinderellas sent home

After a Friday chock full of upsets, NCAA Tournament darlings Stephen F. Austin, Hawaii and Middle Tennessee State were sent home on Sunday afternoon. SFA had a late lead against Notre Dame but stopped running its normal offense and forgot to box out, allowing the Irish to reach the Sweet 16 for the second straight year. One of the writers of this newsletter may or may not have screamed “SEXY REXY” after Rex Pflueger’s game-winning tip-in. He does not feel bad about it.

And after pulling off perhaps the biggest upset in NCAA Tournament history, Middle Tennessee forgot to drink their Michael’s Secret Stuff before taking on Syracuse. After lighting up Michigan State for 91 on Friday the Blue Raiders couldn’t buy a basket and slumped home with a 75-50 beating at the hands of the Orange. But still, nobody is gonna give a dang about that game. That Middle Tennessee team already etched their legacy in stone.

Hawaii led Maryland well into the second half, but Maryland went on a 14-0 run to jump out in front. The turtle squad then proceeded to hit 17 of 17 free throws down the stretch to hold off Hawaii.

Oregon survives scare

The Sunday night late game had some drama to it as we finally got to see a one seed threatened. St. Joe’s led Oregon with two minutes left, but the Ducks strung together defensive stops, hit a three and made their free throws to come out on top.

Yeahhh, Buddy

Player of the Year favorite Buddy Hield lit every inch of the court on fire during the second half of Oklahoma’s win over VCU. Hield scored 29(!) points in the second half of a back and forth affair that saw VCU come back from 15 down to take an eventual lead; one that wouldn’t hold up thanks to Hield.

Villanova is good

Iowa’s late-season collapse finished with a beating at the hands of Villanova. The Wildcats were doubted heading into the tournament, mainly because the Big East doesn’t have the same clout it used to, and their games aren’t on TV all that often. But it turns out they’re really, really good. The Sweet 16 matchup against Miami could be a classic.

Looking forward

The Sweet 16 is loaded. Kansas, Duke, North Carolina, Indiana, Oklahoma, and really, just a bevy of the top seeded teams. In fact, the two lowest seeded teams are perennial power Syracuse, and Gonzaga, who have been in the tournament for 18 straight seasons. Absolutely loaded.
