Stat of the day

With its Big Ten Tournament win Sunday afternoon, Michigan State has now appeared in five of the last six Big Ten championship games played in football or men's basketball, winning four of them. (via @KJfromtheDeck on Twitter)

THE MADNESS THE MADNESS

When it takes two hours to count to 68

Well, it was quite the Selection Sunday. First, professional NBA analyst and non-college basketball analyst Charles Barkley struggled with the touch-screen technology. Then the bracket leaked in the middle of the selection show. Complaints flew in from every corner about it taking Selection Sunday on CBS two hours to reveal all 68 teams. But eventually, we made it through and the full bracket was set.

Break out the red ink

Now that the NCAA tournament is here, it’s time for us all to lose some money in our bracket pools! To help, here are breakdowns of each of the four regions: West, Midwest, South, East.

You still probably won’t win, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try

For the numbers crowd, here is a new thing ESPN is doing called Smart Bracket. It picks games based on ESPN’s Basketball Power Index, which is a fancy way of saying math. And here’s another “smart bracket” from the Power Rank to help with your picks.

Are you intrigued?

There are plenty of intriguing first round matchups; coaches taking on former assistants, games with historical precedent, conflicting styles of basketball, you get the point. And that’s all well and good, but there’s one first round game that we’re most excited about. That game? West Virginia taking on Stephen F. Austin. What makes this seemingly random matchup so intriguing you ask? To answer, we go to our…

Tulsuhhhhhhhhh?

Every NCAA Tournament sees deserving teams left out for less deserving ones. According to our resident bracket expert (again, he doesn’t even know he’s our resident bracket expert) Joe Cook of 1-3-1 Sports, the four major discrepancies this year are Tulsa and Syracuse getting in and St. Bonaventure and St. Mary’s being left out. Maybe the committee has something against “Saint” schools? We can never be sure of that, but what we can be sure of is that Tulsa far and away has drawn the most ire. Seriously, their players didn’t even think they were in.

Arse-not gonna win anything this year

Arsenal’s yearly tradition of finishing fourth in the Premier League (talkin’ soccer here, folks) and challenging for the FA Cup title was dashed Saturday when Watford ended the latter in an FA Cup quarterfinal at the Emirates. One one hand, good for Watford getting to the semis. On the other, LOL Arsenal. There’s very little chance -- if any -- Arsenal catches Leicester City, or Tottenham for that matter, at the top of the Premier League table. And the way things are going, don’t be surprised if Manchester City catches them, too. So at least they can nail down that fourth spot.

Oh yeah, some NBA games were played too

Cleveland knocked off the Los Angeles Clippers 114-90 in one of the team’s biggest wins since Tyronn Lue took over as head coach. And the Knicks and Lakers squared off in a game that would have been great thirty years ago when both teams were good, but now is just really, really sad. Click here to see who won. OK, really, click here.

And NHL games

Toronto, Pittsburgh and Tampa Bay all picked up wins.
