Stat of the Day
With their win last night Wichita State is 9-3 in the NCAA Tournament since 2013; good for a 75% win percentage. A higher percentage than Kansas, Indiana, Virginia, Syracuse and North Carolina . . . and the same as Michigan State. (note: Kentucky would be close but they missed the tournament in 2013)
Your bracket should still be fine
Day one of the NCAA Tournament brought us a few upsets, but nothing earth shattering. Two five seeds went down at the hands of 12 seeds. Yale beat Baylor, It was so nice to finally see something go right for people who go to school at Yale.
Arkansas Little Rock took down Purdue in double overtime after rallying from down 14 with four minutes remaining to force the first extra frame. But really, if you had Purdue, or Baylor for that matter, advancing deep into the tournament . . . well, that’s on you, my friend.
Close, but no cigar
In the first game of the day UNC Wilmington hung close with Duke for most of the game, but couldn’t quite get over the hump. The win sets up a Duke matchup with Yale, which we should all just hope ends up with both of them losing.
There was never really any chance for it to happen, but Florida Gulf Coast was within a few points of one-seed North Carolina a few minutes into the 2nd half. UNC went on a little run and never looked back, ultimately cruising to an easy victory.
Buffalo, Iona and Fresno State did well to hang tough with Miami, Iowa State and Utah respectively. Fresno State had a one-point lead with about eight minutes left, but Utah pulled away shortly thereafter. Buffalo and Iona never really threatened to win, but were close throughout.
Blue bloods cruise
Kentucky, Kansas, Indiana and Virginia all had easy days at the office. Kentucky and Indiana winning provides a very intriguing 2nd round matchup that the committee definitely didn’t set up on purpose. (they did do that)
Strong 11-seeds
Wichita State got out in front of Arizona and held off a late charge to beat the Wildcats by double digits. Just a reminder, Wichita State leads the nation in defensive efficiency and is a much better team than their resume would indicate (No. 8 in KenPom efficiency rating).
Gonzaga pounded a red-hot Seton Hall team, and also doesn’t look like an 11 seed. Amazingly, this was a team that a lot of people thought could be on the outside looking in if it weren’t for winning its conference title.
Bring your kid to work day
This story started making waves Wednesday night and was worthy enough to cut into some NCAA Tournament coverage. Adam LaRoche, a designated hitter for the Chicago White Sox, abruptly retired from baseball because his 14-year-old son was around the team too much for management’s liking. In the days following news came out that LaRoche’s son was with the team 100% of the time in season and EVP Kenny Williams asked LaRoche to draw back how much time his son spent with the team. It’s a mess of a situation with player boycotts, potential contract breach by the White Sox and both sides being right to some extent.
