March 17, 2016: Happy St. Opening Day of the Tournament Day

The Game Managers Bracket Challenge

If you are reading this and it’s not quite 12:15 yet, then there’s still time to enter our bracket challenge. Winner gets a lovely Amazon gift card. Sign up here.

Stat of the Day

Dwayne Bowe was released by the Cleveland Browns after a super productive season … for his financial manager. Bowe made $9 million in 2015, and caught five passes. That’s $1.8 million per catch. Charlie Weis thinks that’s stealing.

It all happens today

After three days of filling out and tweaking your bracket, ESPN/Yahoo/CBS/Your grandpa who still makes you fill out the bracket that runs in the newspaper/etc. will mercifully lock your picks in today. Here’s the full TV schedule. Duke vs. UNC Wilmington is first, meaning we have a really early chance at peak schadenfreude. Not that you needed permission, but it’s also St. Patrick’s Day, so 12:15 p.m. is actually not only an acceptable time to start drinking, it’s almost insultingly late.

But first, the First Four

The second night of the First Four games didn’t exactly make the committee look great, as Michigan and Tulsa managed to make sub-.500 Holy Cross look like the best of the four teams playing on Wednesday. Holy Cross jumped all over Southern before holding on for its first tournament win since the 1950s. The reward? A trip from Dayton, Ohio to Spokane, Washington to take on Oregon, one of the hottest teams in the country.

Michigan and Tulsa had their chance in the second game to flash a giant middle finger at everyone who doubted their inclusion in the field. They did not do that. In fact, they did the opposite of that, playing a good ol’ fashioned game of ‘who wants it less?’ Michigan picked up the win and survives to play Notre Dame on Friday night with another chance to prove it belongs. The Irish haven’t exactly closed the season strong, so it’s certainly possible.

HE’S GOT A FEVER

Even though Tulsa’s night didn’t go as planned on the court, off the court they had the star of the night.

The Association

Nine NBA games were played Wednesday night. Of note: The Wizards beat the Bulls in a battle of teams fighting for the last playoff spot in the East. The Pistons dropped into a tie for the above mentioned final playoff spot after losing to Atlanta. And the Warriors played the Knicks, so we all know how that one went. Fifty straight home wins is insane. Fifty straight anything is insane, really, whether we’re talking wins, losses, successful bowel movements, you name it.

Hockey things

Tweet of the Day

We wanted to pick a bevy of tweets from the uninspiring Michigan victory . . . but we ultimately couldn’t ignore the NCAA telling you how well it always treats their athletes.

You know what? Screw it. We have to have something from that Michigan-Tulsa game. Two tweets of the day!

Vine of the Day

James Harden, defensive specialist.

Easter Egg of the Day

Yesterday’s clue was “that’s a double negative” and the answer led you to a gif of Jim Carrey in Dumb and Dumber.

Today’s clue: Rocky Maivia

Did Tim Tebow get signed today?

No, Tim Tebow remains a free agent at this time.
