April 7, 2016: We have questions about the Warriors

Warriors are proving being too good can be bad

The Golden State Warriors need to go 4-0 to close out the NBA regular season with 73 wins, which would be a record.

You’ve heard this ad nauseum, at least the NBA record part. It’s all that’s been talked about with this team since, hell, December?

To get to 4-0 and 73, the Warriors will have to sweep home-and-homes with the San Antonio Spurs and Memphis Grizzlies. It’s possible, but not likely, mostly because the Spurs are also a historically great team.

Somehow, our awe of the Warriors has turned to disappointment. We expected them to get to 73, and now anything less seems like a failure -- even matching the 1995-96 Bulls at 72 -- mainly because of things like losses against Minnesota, Boston and the Lakers.

More importantly, they look disappointed, and the season hasn’t even ended yet. This historically great team isn’t just looking like it’s going to come up short of an NBA record, it looks like it’s running out of gas before the playoffs begin.

They’ll probably regroup, and probably get to the Western Conference Finals unharmed. But there, they’re probably going to see a San Antonio team that has intermittently rested its top guys because some of them are ancient, and Gregg Popovich has proven he cares very little about regular season wins.

We love that Golden State went on this run and has a chance to get to 73 wins with four games remaining. But chasing history is hard, especially in a league like the NBA when any random bench player can have the shooting night of his life and take you out on any given night.

For the Warriors sake, let’s hope this run at history doesn’t leave them as less than a footnote.

Three Things to Read Today

Even if you actually don’t, you care about golf this week

The Masters is the unofficial kickoff of the PGA season, even though they’ve actually been playing since January. Why do we say that? Because people pay attention to majors, so like the Australian Open is for non-hardcore tennis fans, the Masters is a signal to non-hardcore golf fans that the season is starting. Tiger isn’t playing, but expect a lot of very familiar names to be in contention on Sunday. Before you start watching, read this story about the one family that refused to sell its house to Augusta, which is inspiring and moronic all in one breath. Then read this and remember why you’ve always kind of hated Jim Nantz.

Doolittle does lots … sorry

Oakland Athletics reliever Sean Doolittle is a goofy looking guy, which isn’t that weird for relievers, we suppose. That means he makes for a good story.
