April 21, 2016: Coming at you faster than a Curt Schilling meme after a court decision

Quote of the day

“(It) has a very ‘Dear Annabelle, rations are dwindling’ vibe to it.” - CBS Sports NHL writer Chris Peters on Patrick Eaves’ beard, which looks like this . . .

Three things to read today

This is what that Draft Day movie was trying to do

This is a cool look at the process of the first ever draft for the Baltimore Ravens franchise. It involved a GM ignoring an owner, another team trying to bluff the Ravens and other cool nuggets. It also resulted in the Ravens getting Ray Lewis and Johnathan Ogden, the two most important plays in their franchise history.

Andrew Shaw and the F-word

The Chicago Blackhawks’ Andrew Shaw was suspended for a game for throwing up middle fingers and hurling a gay slur in a blind rage at the end of Chicago’s Tuesday night loss to St. Louis. Well, the Chicago Tribune’s beat writer covering the Blackhawks, Chris Hine, happens to be gay. And he sat down with Shaw after the incident.

The NFL draft is next week?

That thing always sneaks up on us. Mock drafts are pretty silly endeavors if taken at face value, so don’t do that with this three round mock from SI’s Chris Burke. Instead, use it to familiarize yourself with the names your team is projected to pick so you have something to contribute when someone in the office inevitably brings up the draft next week.

About last night . . .

Not pretty, but Cavs still moving

It’s been harder than it should probably be at times for Cleveland, but the Cavaliers beat the Pistons to take a 2-0 series lead. The story was similar to game one, with Detroit hanging tough for a while and Cleveland eventually pulling away by hitting a franchise playoff record 20 threes. If we’re being honest, this series was over before it began, but the Cavs have yet to look like a real threat to the best teams in the Western Conference.

Miami jumps out to 2-0 series lead

I’m not going to lie, I don’t have much to say about this. Charlotte is good, but the Heat are playing really good basketball and are the biggest threat to the afore mentioned sluggish Cavs. I’ll simply say that on the opening possession of the 2nd half, Charlotte shot 0-8. Yes, you read that right. They shot eight times in one possession and missed all of them. The details are in this recap. Game 3 is Saturday in Charlotte.

Flyers delay the inevitable

The Philadelphia Flyers were able to avoid elimination from the Stanley Cup Playoffs for at least one more game with a win over Washington. While comebacks from down 0-3 in a series have happened more times in hockey than any other sport, it’s still incredibly rare, happening only four times in the history of the sport. It is worth mentioning that Philadelphia came back from down 0-3 in 2010 en route to the Stanley Cup Finals. Also of note, the Flyers’ Scott Laughton was sent to the hospital by a hit last night, but all indications are that he is going to be OK.

Panthers even series at 2-2

Florida got a third period goal to earn a 2-1 win over the New York Islanders last night. This is disappointing because it is yet another NHL playoff game won by a single goal scored in the third period, which sounds exciting on the surface, but only means we were again robbed of the greatest thing in sports; overtime playoff hockey. Hopefully teams will quite being such jerks and start waiting until overtime to score game winning goals.

The Clippers aren’t giving us near the amount of chaos we wanted

This was close heading into the fourth quarter, but the Clippers pulled away for another lopsided win. Fittingly, it was the Clippers bench that did most of the damage on the same night Jamal Crawford was handed his NBA Sixth Man of the Year Award. This felt like a series that could entertain us for six, possibly seven games, but the Clippers don’t appear to be letting that happen.

Sharks set Kings up for epic comeback

The Sharks held off a third-period Kings rally to win 3-2 and take a 3-1 series lead. That’s clearly quite a hole for the Kings to dig themselves out of, but knowing their history, and the history of the Sharks, it’s certainly not outside the realm of possibility, especially with two games left to play in the Staples Center.

Stars head back to Minnesota to steal yo girl

There’s something cruel about Dallas putting Minnesota’s season on the brink since, ya know, it stole hockey from Minnesota all those years ago. But here we are, with the Stars leading the Wild 3-1 after a 3-2 win (this was a theme in the NHL, apparently). Minnesota losing hockey to Dallas and then having that same Dallas team come back to Minnesota to beat Minnesota’s new team is the equivalent of a man stealing your wife then coming back to your home and having a threesome with your ex-wife and your new wife. Hockey means a lot to people in Minnesota.

The best of the rest

LeBron James.

Remember that 0-8 Hornets possession we mentioned earlier?

I don’t know if this is real or staged, but I really hope it’s authentic

Context: Curt Schilling was fired from ESPN for a laundry list of--we’ll use a blanket term here--offensive posts on his various social media platforms. Like, he’s been doing it for years and is just kind of a huge jerk about it. So he got fired.
