April 11, 2016: An exhaustive look at a hypothetical Warriors-Bulls matchup

Who would win, today’s Warriors or the 95-96 Bulls?

There’s going to be a lot of debate from now until forever about whether or not the Golden State Warriors could beat the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls, whose record they just matched.

The answer is yes, obviously.

I mean, sure, Michael Jordan could probably still put up 20 in a full-length NBA game. He appears to still be in decent shape, and we all know how old dudes at the Y acquire superpowers that young people can’t figure out. Now imagined the greatest player of all-time acquiring those superpowers.

And Steve Kerr does have intimate knowledge of this Warriors team, so from a tactical standpoint, that would help.

But I just don’t see a bunch of 40-year-old dudes being able to keep up with a team that just tied the NBA record for wins.

Oh! You meant if it were 1996?

Well of course the Bulls would win. Stephen Curry was what, eight? I think actually seven for most of that season. So maybe he gets off a shot or two, but chances are Scottie Pippen locks him down without a ton of trouble.

I’m way too lazy to do research, but I’m pretty sure none of the current Warriors were even in high school in 1996. Heck, I’m pretty sure their top assistant wasn’t even in high school in 1996.

Oh! You meant if you built a time machine and transported this year’s Warriors team back to 1996 to play that year’s Bulls team, or vice versa?

I suppose if the unknown side effects of time travel aren’t too much of a problem, it would probably be a good game.

Three Things to Read Today

A Master collapse

First: What happened to Jordan Spieth late in the Augusta evening wasn’t a choke. A choke implies a mental short circuit rendering an otherwise easy task impossible. No, what we saw was a collapse; a series of bad decisions followed by equally poor execution did the reigning Masters champ in. You’re bound to see and hear 100 (more) takes on those last nine holes, but make sure one you read is Dan Wetzel’s. Right now, nobody is better at putting moments into words than him.

Rexrode signs off

This is coming from a place of partial bias, but it’s worth your time. Longtime MSU beat writer  Joe Rexrode published his last column for the Detroit Free Press yesterday. The subject comes as no surprise to anybody familiar with MSU sports: Tom Izzo. It’s fair to say Izzo is an interesting guy to cover as a reporter and Joe does a great job bringing the reader behind the scenes and lifting the veil a bit on what it’s like to make a living understanding and interpreting one of the biggest successes in college basketball. It’s a must read for fans, other writers, aspiring journalists, aspiring coaches, the list goes on.

Bye, bye, Pasha

Steph Curry runs the offense we all ran in Biddy Ball, except it works . . . and against NBA teams.
