April 27, 2016: The Game Managers would like the injury gods to stop it right now

Quote of the day

“White people been hiding hockey from us for years bruh. This shit lit.” -- Twitter user Tony X., who technically wrote that Monday night, but his discovery of hockey was so damn amazing, we need to link to it somehow.

About last night . . .

Boston loses game 5, best player

The Atlanta Hawks demolished the Boston Celtics last night to take a 3-2 series lead. And adding injury to insult, Boston’s Isaiah Thomas turned his ankle while his team was trailing by 31 points. Game 6 is tomorrow night and Boston is going to need Thomas back if to have a good shot at forcing a game 7.

Toronto survives, makes us look a little less dumb

So about that time we said this series was going to be boring … You know what, forget it. The past is the past, right? Because now here we are after five games, and the Raptors lead 3-2 in a series that appears destined to go to seven games. It seems destined because it was all Toronto could do to avoid falling a 3-2 hole before having to go on the road for Game 6. Indiana led by as many as 13 in the fourth quarter, and Paul George had a huge night, but powered by Drake, the Raptors clawed back and picked up the W.

LA Clippers have bi-polar luck

Aside from all of the tangible things any team needs to win a championship, luck might be the most important factor in determining the winners of our highest sports leagues. If not, it’s certainly the least talked about important factor. The LA Clippers were dealt an extraordinary amount of good fortune with the news that Steph Curry--whose Warriors team would be the Clippers next opponent--injured his knee slipping on a spot of sweat. A few hours later the Clippers two best players sustained injuries that will keep them out of the rest of the playoffs. In short of an Earth’s full rotation the Clippers went from potential NBA finals participant to extreme long shot to get out of the first round. And there’s nothing hustle, chemistry, leadership or a jump shot can do about that.

Justice for The 96

In 1989, nearly 100 people were killed at an FA Cup Semifinal in Hillsborough, as Liverpool fans were herded into pens (literally) well beyond their capacity, and crushed. It was horrific, and by most accounts, it happened because of a lack of leadership and preparedness in the police force that led to the chaos. And after it happened, authorities spent years blaming drunk fans, and not themselves, often going to great lengths to do so. On Tuesday, 27 years after the tragedy, an inquest finally found that the 96 were unlawfully killed that day at Hillsborough. This is the equivalent of 96 fans dying at a poorly managed stadium during an NFL Playoff game, and it taking nearly three decades to get to the bottom of it. Yes, that’s insane. So yes, Tuesday was an emotional day.

Things to read today

Stop being mean to women

In the world of sports internet (and really, almost every other situation), women are often the subject of shitty treatment. But it seems to careen into a beyond excessive realm when focused on women sports writers and reporters. Sarah Spain and Julie DiCaro are two women who fit under that qualifier. And yesterday they put out a video where men volunteered to read some awful tweets people had sent them. It’s powerful stuff.

Digital dating in the professional athlete’s world

ESPN’s Sam Alipour wrote a really interesting article investigating a bunch of professional athlete’s dating life and how they use social media in it. It covers a broad group of social media apps, athletes and dating situations. It also makes me sad that these things weren’t around years ago so we could have amazing stories of historic athletes on them.

Good NFL teams draft better than bad teams . . . mostly

The best of the rest

I need a hero
I'm holding out for a hero 'til the end of the night
He's gotta be strong
And he's gotta be fast
And he's gotta be fresh from the fiiiight
