May 7, 2016: The Weekend Manager can't win you any money

Quote of the Day

“No. He’d need a hockey stick for the 3-2 pitch.” Red Sox manager John Farrell on a controversial call late in his team’s game against the Yankees. David Ortiz was less than pleased.

About Last Night

Cavs get their brooms ready

Cleveland is clicking on all cylinders, and if it keeps playing at this level, isn’t likely to be challenged by anyone in the East. The Hawks are putting up less of a fight than the Pistons, and in front of their home crowd, couldn’t avoid falling into a 0-3 hole. There’s not much hope for Hawks fans, which explains why you’ll hear that guy in the Dominique Wilkins jersey arguing with nobody about how Outkast is better than Bone Thugs n Harmony.

Spurs take back home-court

We make fun of the Capitals and their inability to come through when it matters most, but perhaps it’s time to start wondering the same about the Thunder. Now, let’s be clear, the Spurs are better than the Thunder, and we knew this before the series started. But after stealing (almost literally) Game 2 in San Antonio, the Thunder had a chance Friday night to really get the upperhand in the series, but quite literally threw it away. Russell Westbrook had a brutal stretch with about 2 minutes left, and Kevin Durant threw a pass to Seattle which helped lead to his team falling behind by seven. Amazingly, what happened after the Thunder fought back was worse, as Kawhi Leonard grabbed a crucial offensive rebound, and the Thunder managed to waste nearly 10 seconds to get a bad shot (which actually went in) while down four.

The Spurs are amazing, and Tony Parker turned back the clock. Perhaps the story should really be about the steely nerves and consistency of San Antonio, which leads to steady performances down the stretch. But it’s hard not to have watched this game and feel like the Thunder are lacking something in major moments.

Lightning strikes (get it! Lightning strikes!)

Jason Garrison scored the game winner in overtime, which apparently some people actually guessed in the #bucciovertimechallenge. Those people were drunk. Anyway, the more important point here is that the Lightning are now up 3-1 in the Eastern Conference semifinals and haven’t had Steven Stamkos on the ice for a single second in the postseason. I don’t really care what that means for the Lightning, but I imagine I speak for a good chunk of Red Wings fans who think Ken Holland has lost his touch (some would argue he basically lost it when he had to start making actual cap decisions), and it may be time to find out how much money Steve Yzerman wants to come home. Clearly The Captain -- OUR CAPTAIN -- has figured out how to build a team filled with players who perform in the postseason. I’d rather he be doing that in Detroit.

What to Watch This Weekend

Get your mint juleps ready

The race starts at 6:34 p.m. and will be aired on NBC if you’re only interested in the time horses are actually on the track. Mint juleps start being poured at 8 a.m. (for real, that’s according to the official Kentucky Derby page), so people are going to be smaaaaaaaaaaaaashed by the time the race starts. Nyquist is a pretty heavy favorite at 2-1. He’s running out of Gate 13, which is one gate away from being kind of cool. I’d give you some picks, but I have no idea. So click here.

NBA Playoffs

Cleveland is the only team that can end a series this weekend, while the rest are all about taking control. Miami and Toronto split their first two meetings in Toronto, and now it shifts back to Miami for Games 3 and 4, with the Heat having been pretty clearly the better team. Golden State can go up 3-0, or Portland can show some life at home. Either way, Steph Curry isn’t playing Saturday, and I still think Steve Kerr will rest him until the Western Conference Finals if he can, which he’ll very likely be able to do. On Sunday, Oklahoma City is in a must-win situation, as going down 3-1 against the Spurs with Game 5 in San Antonio is a death sentence.

NHL Playoffs

Pittsburgh can put Washington away Saturday, which will likely create a flood of crying Jordans. Tampa can do the same to the Islanders on Sunday, which will create less crying Jordans, if any at all. Saturday’s other games -- St. Louis at Dallas and Nashville at San Jose -- are crucial Game 5s with the series knotted at 2.

Things to Read

We can’t get enough Leicester City

The title is already wrapped up, and today’s home match against Everton is going to basically be a party for Leicester City supporters and players. The player’s name they’ve sung the most leading up to this moment is Jamie Vardy’s, and after reading his incredible story, you have to believe that was even more incredible for him than a long-irrelevant fanbase.

More soccer, but kind of different

When you think of Juarez, Mexico, you’re not likely thinking of a vacation destination. You’re more likely to be doing research for a paper on the drug trade, or you just watched Narcos and now you’re obsessively researching drug cartels. Not that I did that. Anyway, it’s not the safest place in the world, but its soccer team is now thriving.

. . . and that’s not even the best part of the article.

Best of the Rest

Spurs fans are pretty big Kawhi Leonard fans, which makes sense.

It’s a good thing the Cavs won, otherwise I don’t think Kevin Love would be able to laugh much at this. And this definitely needs to be laughed at.

This too.

May 6, 2016: The Game Managers did not stay awake for three overtimes

Quote of the day

“Quite frankly, they kind of kicked our asses all six games.” -- Brad Ausmus telling the truth after the Tigers were beat up by the Cleveland Indians again. More on that later in the email.

About last night . . .

It’s a good thing they took down that statue

Outside of a few crazies, Joe Paterno’s lasting legacy in this world is a man who enabled a sexual predator for a decade. Well, a few decades could be added to that as Pennlive.com reported last night that a child had informed Paterno of sexual abuse at the hands of Jerry Sandusky in 1976. As article author Charles Thompson puts it, “It came in the form of a single line in a court order on a related insurance coverage case involving Penn State, and its full ramifications can't immediately be gauged.” We shall see what the coming days turn up.

We’re not sure how, but Toronto beat Miami

The Toronto Raptors’ two best players DeMar DeRozan and Kyle Lowry have been less-than-good this postseason. The two have combined for one of the worst true shooting percentages in NBA playoff history, which basically means they’re much more inefficient on offense than almost anyone else ever. They both missed a ton of shots again last night, but Toronto was able to beat Miami thanks to the heroics of mountain-beast Jonas Valanciunas. And the win was needed, because--and we’re not gonna even fact check this--nobody loses the first two games of a series at home and then comes back to win the series. Game 3 is tomorrow night.

CODY EAKIN SCORED THE GAME WINNER IN OVERTIME FOR DALLAS DO YOU GET THE JOKE? DO YOU GET IT?

The Blues had a great chance to all but cement their first trip to a Western Conference Final in franchise history--not a real fact, but it really feels like it given their last two decades of playoff disappointment--but they couldn’t get it done on their home ice. The series is all square at 2 and heads back to Dallas where I’m sure nothing heartbreaking will happen for St. Louis Blues fans because they don’t have any bad history with Dallas other than perhaps the best player in St. Louis franchise history leaving the team for Dallas and winning the Stanley Cup with Dallas the very next year nope no bad history there.
(Brett Hull was in the crease)

Nashville beat San Jose because they had to stop playing at some point

Carrie Underwood’s husband scored in the third overtime to give Nashville a 4-3 win against San Jose and some life in a series that was one shot away from being 3-0 Sharks. But now that they’ve played 75% of Game 4, anything can happen. A reminder that playing three OTs is hard. At this point you’re probably coming to the conclusion that we didn’t stay up past midnight to watch the Predators and the Sharks, and that is a correct conclusion.

The Tigers can’t beat the Indians

We’ll just set this down right here:

Take this quiz to waste time at work

ESPN has a little personality quiz that matches you up with the NBA franchise you share the most similar line of thinking with. Wil got the Lakers because he is a proud champion whose knees hurt and has seen better days. Paul got the Spurs, making him the most boring person ever and now he’s kinda sad.

2013 DRAFT RE-GRADES

SI went back and graded the 2013 draft classes and you will not guess what grade the Detroit Lions got. Seriously, you won’t. Also, you’ll be very confused by where teams are graded relative to their recent runs of success, a.k.a some great teams blew full drafts. Also, Jeff Fisher gets the exact grade you think he would get.

May 5, 2016: The Game Managers think you shouldn’t let the Cavs make 25 threes in a game

Quote of the day

“Charles Oakley doesn’t like me, which is no big deal. I don’t like him or dislike him, I don’t think about him. He’s not important enough for me to think about.” -- Charles Barkley responding to a tweet from Charles Oakley. Instead of tossing Ken Shamrock and Kimbo Slice in a cage way past their primes, why not a Barkley vs. Oakley cage match? I’d pay to watch that.

About last night . . .

The 25 three-pointers mentioned above? That’s an all-time NBA record for either a postseason or regular season game. They made 18 in the first half, and NBA postseason record for a single half. At no point after the start was this game close and it was 74-38 at the half, which prompted the Hawks official Twitter account to send these gems out:

Screen Shot 2016-05-04 at 10.16.38 PM.png

Screen Shot 2016-05-04 at 9.45.14 PM.png

Their only choice at the time was to just lean into the buzzsaw.

After competing well in game 1, Atlanta looked like they didn’t belong on the floor with Cleveland. Here’s to hoping going back home helps the Hawks, because there have been way too many blowouts this NBA postseason. Also, do what this man says, Atlanta, because it can’t hurt.

Screen Shot 2016-05-04 at 11.51.51 PM.png

Atlanta rappers ASSEMBLE!!!!

Yeah, the Capitals are totally doing that thing again

Let’s start with acknowledging that the Red Wings followed up their best regular season of all-time with a loss to their biggest rival, the Colorado Avalanche, in 1996. So we get it. But oh boy, the Capitals are Capitalsing again. Look, Pittsburgh is really good, and has two of the best players in the world on its roster, so losing a few close games against the Penguins isn’t some ridiculous failure. With the Caps, however, it’s part of a larger trend, in which they can’t win these close playoff games, not even in a season where they were very clearly the best team in the league for 82 games. The good news for Washington is they get a couple days to recoup before playing Game 5 at home on Saturday. The bad news is their fans know about this history more than anyone, and if the team falls behind, you may start to hear some boo birds.

What were you doing at 26? Or if you’re not 26, what do you reasonably think you’ll be doing at that age? Running a professional sports franchise like John Chayka? The guy is younger than half of the roster he is now in charge of. I can barely keep track of what groceries I have in my house, I don’t know how in the hell I’d ever generally manage an NHL team. What the hell? GMs are supposed to be older people with bullet proof resumes that have spent years studying every aspect of the game. What. The. Hell.

May 4, 2016: The Game Managers have also made a halfcourt shot that turned out to be meaningless

Quote of the day

“You know, the amazing thing is that basketball ring . . .” - Ted Cruz, last week, failing at recreating that scene from Hoosiers while campaigning in Indiana. Basketball fans would say it’s no coincidence his campaign ended last night.

About last night . . .

Raptors totally blow an amazing moment

A halfcourt buzzer beater following an improbable rally is normally the type of thing that energizes a team. To be clear, we mean the team that hit the buzzer beater after the improbably rally. Toronto missed this memo, and despite forcing overtime with a ridiculous shot from Kyle Lowry, lost Game 1 against Miami by falling completely on its face in the extra session. Drake will write a song about this game, and 100 women will believe it’s about them, but only because he has a sex move called the Kyle Lowry.

Warriors don’t need Steph Curry (just kidding, yes they do)

But at the moment, they actually kind of don’t. The Warriors outscored Portland 34-12 in the fourth quarter of Game 2 to win 110-99 and take a 2-0 lead in the series, despite getting zero minutes from Steph for the third straight game. It sounds like he’s healing well and will be ready to go in this series, but at this point, why?

Lightning snatch home ice advantage back

Tampa Bay and New York split the first two games of the series down in America’s sketchiest panhandle, so the Lightning were going to have to do some work on the road to preserve their chances at winning the series. They did just that with a 5-4 win in OT after tying the game in the waning moments of the 3rd period. The onus now shifts to the Islanders, lest they be forced to win three straight games--two on the road--to win the series. Game 4 is Friday night in Brooklyn.

Nashville gets on the board

It seems the luck of Joe-PAW-velski has been put on hold (more on that later). Nashville won 4-1 last night to cut their 2-0 series deficit in half, while disappointing one Bay Area kitten in particular. The victory is probably a season-saving one for Nashville as the perils of being down 0-3 in a series are well documented. Being down 3-1 isn’t all that much better, so game 4 tomorrow night is a biggun.

Blues romp Stars in honor of Tony X.

If you’re struggling to recall who Tony X. is, he’s a guy who accidentally fell in love with hockey one night, broadcasted such things on Twitter and quickly became one of hockey’s greatest fans. He became such a thing that the St. Louis Blues invited him out to game 3 and he and they couldn’t have asked for a better result. The Blues were all over the Stars and won 6-1 to take a 2-1 series lead. We’re not much for rooting for St. Louis because we grew up as Red Wings fans in the 90’s, but they’re overdue and the city just lost a football team. They could use a reason to gain more hockey fans.

Things to read today

Steven Adams is a gargantuan center for the Oklahoma City Thunder. His physique combined with long, dark hair and an excellent mustache make him look like a samurai, Cavalier and mountain all smooshed into one being. And, he’s from New Zealand, where they don’t really play much basketball.

Last week we encouraged you to watch a video of men reading degrading and awful tweets that were directed at women sportswriters to those very sportswriters. This is basically that, extended and in words.

But what about that cat that ran onto the ice in San Jose last week?

She’s okay! The kitten hid under the bleachers in the rink after getting off the ice and staff were able to wrangle it and get it to the humane society. There it was discovered the kitten was a girl, so the originally dubbed “Joe-PAW-velski becam Jo-PAW-velski. We’re a little bummed the team didn’t just adopt the cat as an unofficial mascot, but we’re sure some lucky person will take care of that.
